Observing Bedbugs

There are actually quite a few types of bed bug, but the one that most people mean by ‘bedbugs’ is Cimex lectularius. Other types of bedbugs will suck human blood, but normally only if their favoured host, like poultry, is unavailable.

Bedbugs are tiny, but not too small to see. Adults are about four or five millimetres in length and one-and-a-half to three millimetres in width. They are brownish in colour, but may appear banded because they are covered in short hairs.

Having said that, they are still not easy to get a good look at, because they are very quick and only come out at night. In fact, their favourite dinner time is more of an early breakfast, because they normally dine on us an hour before dawn. If you want to see or catch some bedbugs, this is the best time too do it, because you may see them struggling to get home with full bellies to sleep it off for a few days before going out again.

So, rather than waste your time, it is probably better to look at a number of pictures of bedbugs first so that you know what you are looking for.. Bedbugs are attracted by heat and CO2, so one way of trying to catch a few is putting a bar of soap in a centimetre of water and then lying on the bed. After half an hour, get the soap and whip the bed clothes back. You can dab up any slow coaches with the soap.

Then you will have plenty of time to study them under a magnifying lens. If they are not living in your mattress and you are certain that you have bed bugs, check behind any loose-fitting woodwork.

They love to get into dark crevices to sleep it off and skirting boards or architrave are ideal. So is damaged plaster, broken lino or ripped wall paper.

Hardly any crack is too thin for them, because they are so thin themselves, as you can see from photos. They look as if they have been flattened. However, the nymphs or babies are very small, a bit rounder and frequently whitish. It takes six moultings for a nymph to become an adult and the moulted skins look just like the insect that left it, but with nothing inside it – as if it had been kind of sucked out.

The bedbug’s skin is in fact the key to killing it, as bedbugs have become tolerant to most everyday insecticides. Their skin, or exoskeleton, has a waxy layer on it to stop dehydration. If you can remove that wax, the insect will dry out and die.

Some modern bedbug sprays incorporate finely powdered glass or silicone which sticks to the insect and as it wriggles into crevices, the powder scrapes the wax off. Diatomaceous earth was used for the same purpose long ago and it is making a comeback in the fight to eradicate bed bugs. It is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, so safe to deploy in your home and close to your pets.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is at present concerned with bed bugs extermination. If you are interested in this, please go over to our website now at Picture Of Bed Bugs for more information.

Is There A The Best Skin Care Product?

Everybody would love to know the answer the to question: which is the best skin care product? It is the $64,000 question. However, it is not a practical question. Why not? Solely, because there are at least three diverse skin types: dry, normal and oily.

There are also variations of these, including sensitive skin. Furthermore, not all the skin on your body is of the same type either. The question should be: which is the best skin care product for me?

So, if it genuinely is your mission to find out which is the best skin care product for you, then you first have to have your skin type appraised by an expert in skin care. This may cost you a few dollars, but it will stop you buying skin care goods that are unsuitable for yourself for many years, which would be a bigger waste of money.

In fact, our skin can alter type quite often in our lives. It normally has something to do with hormonal changes for both men and women, so it could be a good idea to get a professional judgment on your skin type every five years or less.

The fact of the matter is that, how you apply your skin care products is equally, if not more important than the brand of your skin care products that you employ. How often you use them is also critically important. Therefore, no matter what you decide on buying, you must read the instruction leaflet and abide by it.

We all tend to be distrustful of manufacturers’ recommendations because they all recommend slapping it on liberally, so that you have to buy more, but really, you have to follow their course of action at least for one tub and then make up your mind whether you want to jump ship. It should go without saying that, if the instruction booklet is sketchy or unintelligible, that you should not buy that product.

Be suspicious of purchasing skin care ointments when you are abroad. You may see the name of your favourite merchandise being sold really cheaply in the duty free shop, when you are on holiday in a foreign country, but that product may have been modified to suit the climate of that country. For example, moisturizer for people with dry skin may not have the same ingredients in Thailand as would have in Iceland.

Other general hints on getting the most from your skin care products is to rub on them onto a clean surface. That means that it is better to clean off your makeup with makeup remover than it is to use soap and water. Toner and exfoliant will also make it easier get down to your real skin.

The last point is that you may not be able to make a decision on the efficacy of your skin care product over night. If things seem to be progressing well, then great, carry on, you may find out later that there is something better, but if you come to understand that a skin care product is not right for you, then reject it and move on in your mission for finding out which is the best skin care product for you.

Kitchen Gadgets And Other Useful Implements

Are you one of the many people who likes kitchen gadgets? Most people who cook are very fond of or even hooked on kitchen gadgets. Naturally, some kitchen gadgets are more useful than others and some are absolutely essential.Who could do without a cooker, a kettle or a coffee maker? Mixers and blenders are common items too and electric tin openers and knife sharpeners are to be found in many kitchens. How much cooking would you be able to do if the electricity was cut off?

People have always loved labour-saving devices, the only aspect that has changed is that the majority of the modern kitchen gadgets are electric these days. We had a water-driven potato peeler when I was a child. It was connected to the tap by a hose and the water drove a wheel which span an abrasive wheel which took the skin off a pound or two of potatoes.

We also had a hand apple corer and a garlic press, but that was about it. On the other hand, our kitchen has quite a few electric gadgets, including a juicer, a rice cooker and a bread-making machine.

My wife’s favourite kitchen gadget is the rice cooker, but then she is Thai and eats quite a bit of rice. In deed, the rice cooker is only switched off to wash and refill it. It leaves a beautiful sweet smell in the air which is not unlike fresh bead, if you use Jasmin rice, which is Thailand’s best.

When I lived in Britain, my kitchen was jam-packed with gadgets, but some of the things I used to use just once a month over there, I now see being used every day. For instance, I had a wok and a bamboo steamer which I used once in a blue moon, now all my food is cooked either in a wok, in a bamboo steamer or on a barbecue.

Likewise, I had a pestle and mortar which looked impressive on the top of the cupboard. It gave the impression that I was a real cook, but I never truly found a need for it. Now my wife uses a massive granite pestle and mortar to prepare every meal. It weighs approximately ten pounds and is large enough to mix a cake in; the broad end of the pestle will fill half an orange (I use that as a juicer, that is how I know).

My favourite kitchen gadget is the bread maker, but then I am European and am very partial to bread. Where I live though, in northern rural Thailand, the bread is very sweet by Western standards and took me a few years to get accustomed to. Now I can make my own and I really like it, although getting strong flour is not so straightforward.

I like to put the ingredients in the bread machine before I go to bed and set the timer so that the bread is ready when I wake up. You do not need an alarm clock with the smell of fresh bread emanating from the kitchen! Now all I miss is cheese, but I have not found a cheese-maker yet.
