The UK’s Most Dangerous Jobs

Just last month 33 Chilean miners escaped the underground cave system they had been trapped in for 69 days. Though they all miraculously survived, many were suffering from breathing difficulties and eye conditions when they reached the surface. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever find yourself in their situation while at work, but the miner’s plight prompted us to take a look at the most dangerous jobs in the UK.

Farming is statistically the most dangerous industry in the UK for serious accidents at work. It has been revealed that 38 people lost their lives in farm accidents in 2009 and a further 589 people were seriously injured. The figures mean working in agriculture is one of the most dangerous ways to make a living, accounting for one in five work-related deaths, although only 1.5% of the population actually work on farms. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the majority (27%) of fatalities were due to moving machinery, while the most common injuries occurred through handling, lifting or carrying objects (26%).

But the highest fatality rates in the UK are for deep sea workers. People in this profession are 50 times more likely to die compared to those in other professions. Commercial fishing boats are often small meaning they are easily capsized and can sometimes be stranded in deep seas far from any help. Work on the vessel itself often involves dangerous equipment such as nets, chains and sharp objects which need to be operated under harsh conditions or very little light.

It may surprise you that the common builder is at serious risk during his working day. The nature of construction means that employers can find it impossible to ensure the safety of their workers. The construction industry often requires work to be carried out at extreme height or in an unstable environment with the risk of moving or falling heavy objects. The HSE are currently working towards raising awareness of the dangers on construction sites, in an effort to reduce the 11,264 injuries which were sustained last year.

Toning Tips: How To Get Trim With Reebok Easytone

There are millions of training regimes and diets to get fit and firm yourself up, most of which involve changing your lifestyle, joining a gym or taking time out of your day to engage in some form of activity.

But if you look hard enough you will find a few methods of getting in shape without changing your day to day routine. One very good, very new method is using the Reebok Easytone trainers, a shoe designed to create instability which the body naturally counteracts.

Leading the test was John Porcari PhD, who agrees that the trainers should work in theory as they create instability that the body attempts to counteract thus making the muscles work harder. The shoes are based on a curved sole which creates an unstable surface which forces the wearer’s body to constantly struggle to find equilibrium.

The model turned actress enjoys swimming, yoga and dancing but focuses on her dance and fitness classes, which made her the perfect candidate for this exercise product aimed primarily at women.

She has recently become somewhat of a movie star and is currently starring in the film Piranha 3D. Although she only studied at drama school for three years when she was younger, she said this started her love of dancing, which she still does to keep in shape.

So if you’re off doing the weekly shop or just walking around the workplace, your legs will be in constant workout. The company commissioned a study to determine how effective the trainers were and the results noted at least an 11% increase in muscle activity in the calves and gluteus during simple activities. However none of the subjects notices a difference in aching or physical exertion.

Consumers have so far gone mad for the Reebok easytone range and there is rumour of further, more casual models to be added to the popular easytone trainers

Reebok Easytone: Fit Or Fad?

Sports giants Reebok recently brought out a range of trainers designed to improve toning in the legs and bum. They called the range ‘easytone’, which spanned from the concept of the shoe. The trainers are designed with a convex sole which creates instability; it forces the foot to balance on a smaller surface area than usual. This means the leg is constantly trying to find a balance point and keeps the muscles working on a small scale, even while walking.

The model and actress is the face of the new line of trainers said to improve toning in the legs and bum via a unique unstable sole. She will also be their spokeswoman for their new Jukari Fit to Flex workout. Reebok created the workout with inspiration from the performances of Cirque du Soleil. It targets core muscles and the upper body by using a lightweight elastic band that can be used in a variety of ways.

Brook, now 30, says she is happy with her body and has accepted who she is, but still maintains a fitness regime. She says “I’ve hit 30 and I have accepted this is my body shape, and I’m happy with what I am and who I am. My legs are quite toned at the moment and I have a small waist so I dress to accentuate it. I have a bigger bum and bigger boobs but I’m generally small-boned. I’ve got real boobs and I guess they could be a bit perkier! But in general I’m pretty happy with everything.”

The Reetone range was tested on a group of females aged 19 to 24. The subjects were put through exercise trials and had muscle activation, heart rate and caloric expenditure measured.

Kelly recently launched a movie career and is starring in the film Piranha 3D. She only studied at drama school for three years when she was younger but said this started her love of dancing, which she still does to keep in shape.

The results declared an increase in muscle activity for the subjects wearing the Easytone trainers in the muscles specified, but not to the degree Reebok claimed. The verdict is that although the trainers do provide a small degree of extra muscle usage, they are fairly expensive and it would depend on the individual consumer as to whether they believed it was worth it. Judging by the perky models featured in the advert, the campaign is likely to be very successful in convincing consumers of this.

Consumers can get their hand on the easytone trainers in stores and online and there is rumour of a extended Reebok easytone due next year.
